HOW FINDING A WIFE IS A BLESSING - PROVERBS 18:22

Dr. Ryan here. Thank you for joining me. This is our 246th episode of teaching. I'm glad that you can join me and I hope that you're getting something out of each and every time that we get together.

Proverbs 18 22 says, he who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the Lord. Today I want to talk to you about why finding a wife is a blessing. Now it's a blessing because God says that if you find one, you receive favor from the Lord. Now what does it mean to find one? And let's break this down one piece at a time so we can get some wisdom from this.

First - It says he who finds. So finds here means to get or to meet. So there's two approaches to finding a wife. You can go get one. Now this is a little aggressive. This is really the posture of people that are desperate. I'm going to go get a wife. Well that's a little aggressive. It's a little impatient.

What you want to do, you want to pray that God will help you to meet your wife.

Now this is the sweet spot that you want to be in. Not so much as I'm going to go get, but Lord open up the door of opportunity for me to meet my wife if you don't yet have one. Of course you're not praying this verse if you're already married because that wouldn't be appreciated what God has already blessed you with. So it says to get or to meet a wife. Now that word might be offensive. God plans for you to be in a relationship with a man and a woman. I know that makes certain people mad. Now when we get to heaven we can all talk to God about what he said. I'm just telling you what he said over and over and over again in his word to us. So if you want to talk to God about that someday I suggest you get to heaven so that you can talk to him about that very important issue.

Second - Now it says that he who finds a wife finds a good thing. So finding a wife is a good thing. It's a blessing because we're designed to have camaraderie, friendship and someone to share life with. So when you find that, that is a good thing. And it says that you obtain. Now what this means is that when you find a wife it's proof that you have God's favor. Now this is interesting. When you find a wife, when you meet your wife this is the proof that you have that you have God's favor. Now a lot of people think well I have God's favor. No, stop right there. You have God's favor if you have a wife. That's powerful because God's given you someone to enjoy this life with.

Third - And favor means that God is pleased with you that you have chosen to have a wife. So you're going to meet your wife. This is the proof that God's blessing is going to be upon you. And then it's also the proof that God is actually pleased with you. All of this adds up to God wanting you to have a wife. God wanting to bless you with a wife so that you can have companionship, you can have friendship, you can enjoy life, you can have camaraderie in your time that you get to spend on earth. It's better to have someone to share that with than to go through it alone. That's God's idealized version for your life. So this is encouraging to you. It's a blessing if you have a wife. If you have a wife, I want to encourage you to cherish her, serve her, and be there for her.
