WISDOM AS BUILDING - PROVERBS 9
Today I want to talk about wisdom as building,
We are all building a life. We are every day deciphering what ingredients we're going to put in, what ingredients we're going to take out.
We are deciding every day the material that we're going to use to build the life that we want. And so whether we are aware of it or not, whether it's in our conscious or unconscious thoughts, we are all building a life. So Proverbs has several recommendations for us about how to build that life. Today I want to talk to you about a few of them. Proverbs 9, it says that wisdom has built a house. She's carved it with seven columns.
So first thing we understand is that all the wisdom of the world has already been put together by God. So God used his wisdom to make the earth, to make the solar system, to make the galaxies. And so I teach that everything comes from God. All truth comes from God. So God used his wisdom to make the world. So we want to tap into that wisdom as much as we possibly can.
So the first thing we're going to learn is that wisdom is already. God has all of the information of the world. We do not. Which leads me to my second point. Wise person is going to understand that all the wisdom is already out there. It's from God. You need to admit your lack of leverage. Now when you're playing poker or you're making a calculated risk for your life, you discover the word leverage. Now the wise person understands when they have leverage and when they don't.
So when it comes to information, when it comes to wisdom, the smartest thing we can do is to admit that we don't have all of it. This is the beginning of humility to say, I don't know everything. I don't understand everything. I'm not God.
It's baffling to me how many supposedly smart people I see get this wrong almost every day.
So you want to admit your leverage. What is your leverage when it comes to all the wisdom of the universe? The answer, not a whole lot. And so that may seem to put you at a disadvantage, but actually it doesn't because the sooner that you admit you have a limited scope, a limited perspective, that actually gives you an advantage.
And so the advantage that it gives you is that if you understand all the wisdom's already out there, if you admit your leverage that you don't know everything, ironically, that's when your leverage starts because then you're able to maximize your learning potential and you're able to do that by learning from others.
Now verse five, it says, come eat my food and drink the wine that I've mixed.
God has long been at work far before we came along. Again, that's a humbling thing. We get to participate in what he's already doing. We don't do it all. We get to jump into this stream of beautiful activity that's already been happening all around the world. You're able to learn from others.
So this is cool. When you start to use your ears, now God gave you two ears, one mouth. It's a science lesson on your leverage. So if you'll listen twice as much as you'll speak, you get ahead. When you talk more than you listen, you get behind. So what we want to do, we want to listen to the wisdom, to the mistakes, to the lessons of others talk less, this gets us ahead.
And then fourthly, that's when wisdom starts to compound. Look at verse nine, Proverbs 9:9, "instruct the wise. They will be even wiser."
Wow. Teach the righteous and they will learn even more. So the key to investing is you put a dollar in, you wait a little bit of time, turns into $2. Wow. Amazing, right? $1 turns into $2. Pretty good move.
Wisdom acts like this when you get the foundation right. You listen, you learn twice as effective. So God's helping us to get ahead, but it takes some humility. God's made all the wisdom. You admit your leverage. You accept that we're here to learn, we're here to absorb from others, from God, from wise people in our life. And then really that wisdom starts to compound. If you teach a wise person something, the Bible says that they become even wiser. So the wisdom starts to compound. It's very interesting.
One of the best things we can do in our life is to say, Lord, I submit to you, to your will, to your plan, to your authority, to whatever you want to do in me, in my family, in my life, in my ministry. And God, we ask you humbly to help us with that today in Jesus' name.
And thanks so much for joining me. Until next time, I hope you have a beautiful day.
