WISDOM AS PURITY - PROVERBS 5

Today I want to talk to you about wisdom as purity.

So the Bible says that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and purity is a big part of wisdom, says in Thessalonians chapter 4. Without holiness, no one will see the Lord. So this has to do with our intention. God wants our intention and our motives to be for purity. God calls us to holiness. So what exactly are we talking about?

We're talking about wisdom as purity. So what this infers is that as we pursue purity, we become wiser. We're able to make better decisions every day. That's exactly what we both want to be doing as we follow Jesus, become better decision makers.

So Proverbs 5 outlines, I highlighted four things that it's getting at.

The first is that we can avoid bitterness. So interesting word here, it's talking about bitter water, bitter food. So there seems to be a correlation between our pursuit of our own moral purity and the way that life tastes. Now this is very interesting. We cannot control the situations and the circumstances of our life. In this world, we experience profound love and profound heartache, profound joy, profound suffering because this is what of course it means to be human. No one is exempt from the highs and lows of this life.

However, the Bible seems to indicate that if our intention is to please God, it can cause us to taste life and experience life in a very deep, very profound way. So if people disregard the laws of God, they do what they want, they're deliberately sinful, it causes us to see life in a skewed manner. It also causes us to experience and to really taste life in a certain, the Bible would say a bitter way. So we want to avoid being bitter for our own good. So the Bible says specifically in Proverbs 5 to avoid the adulterous woman. Now all sins are forgivable, sins have different consequences. One of the consequences of living in a quote an impure life is that we begin to see life and taste life and experience life and filter life through a bitter lens. So when the Bible is saying that we're to be called to purity and that we can avoid bitterness, this is for our own good.

Now the second thing it points out is that you can avoid death. Now death here, it means the letting go of the expectations and the letting go of the wisdom and the vision that we have for our life. Now we can avoid death. Now as we're impure, it causes standards in our life to die.

As we're impure, it causes us to change the filter by which we interpret life.

As we disconnect from God, as we disconnect from others, there's something in us that goes the way of death. There's something inside of us that dies. As we grow closer to God, as our intention is for God, as our intention is for purity, as our motivation is for purity, there is something inside of us that comes alive. So we're to avoid bitterness, we can avoid death.

And the third thing is you can avoid wasting your wealth. Now as we develop discipline in our life, discipline with our eyes, discipline with our thoughts, discipline with our motives, this has to do with purity of intention, it actually stores up wealth for us. Wealth here is an interesting word.

Yes, it means monetary wealth, it means asset wealth, but here's an interesting thing, it also means your energy. So get this, as you pursue purity of thought, of sight, of heart, of intention for God and what he has, you actually avoid wasting your energy. That is powerful.

And then the fourth thing is you can avoid being ruined. And carries with it the idea of regret. Now as we make right decisions, as we stay in step with the spirit, as we walk with the Holy Spirit, the regret in our life, it lessens. And so instead of carrying around a bunch of things, we're not carrying around regret. As you develop purity of intention, purity of lifestyle, regrets, they dissipate. The circumstances that you wish you could take back, they lessen. And so really, this isn't a subject of energy. And so as we avoid bitterness, as we avoid death, we avoid wasting our wealth, we avoid being ruined, that purity gives us more energy and it gives us the outlook that we are looking for as we follow Jesus.

So one of the things we may want to pray right now is Lord, would you give me your purity? Give me your holiness because I would like to have more energy and I'd like to have a more positive, godly outlook for the things that I'm facing. And thanks so much for joining me. Until next time, have a beautiful day.
